The Fawnling

Most automatic drawings and free form sketches never make it out of my sketch book. This was one of the few ones that did.  I was drawing the horns touching either side of the drawing area; and as I was roughing in the figure of what was attached to the horns this sad, young fawn creature appeared.

The fawn is some kind of ode to renaissance portraiture, mixed in with conflicting subconscious symbols. Aggressive bull’s horns set on a cherubic young face. Arrows embedded in a body, but a still enough hand for a butterfly. Innocence wounded, harmed by love? Or just a delightfully strange fae figure with no real meaning at all.

This piece was featured in Red Tree Gallery’s show for black and white works. The original is available for sale, prints and other curios available for purchase on Redbubble.
